Cameroon Nutrition Data Base

Each hour, approximately 4,566 people die from a non-communicable disease. Unhealthy diets are a leading cause of NCD deaths due to the high consumption of foods or beverages high in salt, sugar, and saturated fats. Today, we have so many unhealthy products that it is difficult to know which is healthy and which is not. It is vital for consumers to easily access clear information to identify unhealthy foods and beverages so that they can make healthier choices as they buy and eat. Companies producing packaged food products also have to consider people before profits when making food products and ensure they align with recommended content amounts by WHO.
RADA has been working on advocating a Font of Package Warning Label (FoPL) in Cameroon. As part of this project, we analyzed 503 packaged food product labels and categorized them according to the WHO Afro Nutrient Profile Model. The data collected from this analysis has now served to inform the global nutrition database launched on December 15, 2022, by our Technical and funding partner, Resolve to Save Lives.
As the project Director, Mr Ferdinant M Sonyuy has expressed, “This database is rich and necessary for all countries. It is a great tool. Some countries might have thought about it and never executed it, but this database brings to fruition a necessary tool for monitoring critical nutrients globally. I encourage governments to take responsibility for their citizens by engaging with this program and using it for baselines and monitoring.”

This is a groundbreaking innovation to support countries in monitoring disease prevention and controlling diet risk factors.
