THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROGRAM

The purpose of this program is to create healthier food environments in Cameroon, reducing diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through policy advocacy on warning labels, taxation, public food procurement, and food reformulation.

Reduce Diet-Related Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) Through Policy Advocacy

To reduce the rising burden of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and certain cancers by targeting their root cause and main risk factor: unhealthy diets. Rather than relying solely on individual behavior change, HECP focuses on creating systemic change through evidence-based policy advocacy. By pushing for government regulations on food labeling, marketing restrictions, and taxation, the program seeks to reshape the food environment so that healthier choices become the easier, more accessible default for all Cameroonians.

Establish a Comprehensive Regulatory Framework for Healthier Food Environments

HECP works to institutionalize four key policy interventions that collectively create an enabling environment for healthy eating:

– Front-of-Package Warning Labels (FOPWL)

– Marketing Restrictions

– Taxation of Unhealthy Packaged Foods

– Public Food Procurement and Reformulation

Mobilize Multi-Sectoral Collaboration and Public Awareness

By recognizing that no single organization can achieve these goals alone, HECP prioritizes coalition-building and public engagement. The program has successfully established the Coalition for the Promotion of Healthy Diets in Cameroon, uniting over 20 civil society organizations under a shared advocacy agenda. Through community outreach and media engagement including publications in national outlets the program has reached over 100,000 persons with education on the dangers of unhealthy diets.
