Academic Clubs -Acub
A student-led initiative empowering learners through academic excellence, leadership development, life skills, and community engagement in schools and universities.
Program Overview
These are clubs in high school and university created to support students in studying with a purpose. The practical purpose of leveraging their skills and knowledge is to make the world a better place. The clubs promote Academic Excellence, engagement in Community Development activities, and Life Planning.
Globally, educational systems are under increasing pressure to prepare learners not just academically, but for real-life challenges. Yet, over 60% of students in Sub-Saharan Africa lack structured life skills and career development support, according to the World Bank (2021). This deficit contributes to weak leadership capacity, high youth unemployment, and poor social engagement. In Africa, many students graduate without the soft skills needed to thrive in workplaces or their communities. Schooling remains largely exam-driven, leaving students without adequate exposure to teamwork, leadership, civic responsibility, and decision-making. Extracurricular activities, particularly structured academic clubs, are either non-existent or poorly supported.
In Cameroon, this issue is acute. The educational model is often rigid, theoretical, and examination-cantered, with minimal focus on holistic development. UNESCO (2021) reports that over 70% of students in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Cameroon, lack access to structured extracurricular programs such as academic clubs that build soft skills. The situation is more critical in the North West Region, a conflict-affected zone where over 600,000 children have experienced disrupted education due to the Anglophone Crisis (UNICEF Cameroon, 2020). Many schools operate irregularly, and students face limited academic support, psychosocial trauma, and insecurity. School dropout rates exceed 35% in rural and conflict-impacted areas (MINEDUB, 2021), while youth unemployment is high and increasing.
Gender-based violence (GBV) also undermines education in the region. UNICEF (2020) found that 1 in 3 adolescent girls in the North West and South West have experienced violence or harassment in or around school.
The ACUBS Initiative seeks to
address these multidimensional challenges. The Reconciliation and Development Association (RADA) has designed the Academic Clubs (ACUBS) initiative a student-led, school-based program to promote academic excellence, leadership, soft skills, and life-readiness.
ACUBS are structured clubs that will be established or strengthened in secondary schools, universities, and higher institutes through collaboration with educational institutions.
The clubs operate year-round and include interactive sessions that go beyond textbook learning, focusing on emotional intelligence, peer mentoring, personal development, civic responsibility, and real-world problem-solving.
THREE MAIN OBJECTIVES FOR THE PROGRAM
- Promote leadership, teamwork, and communication through participatory, student-led activities.
