Circles Volunteer Program

A RADA-led initiative empowering young graduates in Cameroon with practical skills, employability training, and community engagement opportunities.

Program Overview

Education is a crucial tool that promotes lifelong learning and development across all ages and social groups. In Cameroon, higher education has seen significant growth, with official data showing 59,226 graduates in 2018 compared to 53,389 in 2017an increase of about 11%. Between 2017 and 2018, a total of 112,615 students graduated from the country’s eight state universities, 226 private higher education institutes, and three special-status institutions. During the same period, student enrolment also rose by 7.3%, from 295,058 to 316,631, reflecting the increasing demand for higher education in Cameroon.

However, despite this progress, unemployment remains a major issue, as many graduates find themselves unprepared for the job market due to a curriculum focused more on exams than practical skills. The limited opportunities for youths to gain hands-on experience, coupled with negative attitudes toward local employment and the ongoing socio-political crisis in the English-speaking regions, has led to frustration, poverty, crime, and low productivity. To address this, the Reconciliation and Development Association (RADA) launched the Circles Volunteer Program (CVP) on February 1, 2021. The program equips young graduates with employability skills, practical experience, and income-generating opportunities to enhance their capacity, build their confidence, and readiness for the job market.

THREE MAIN OBJECTIVES FOR THE PROGRAM

  1. To build the capacity of young people to identify real community problems and elaborate solutions to them in their domains of interest in the city of Bamenda.
  2. Provide support and Mentorship to participants for career and personal growth through implementation of their community action projects within RADA.
  3. Promote income generating activity trainings

THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROGRAM

The overall goal of the program is to strengthen behavioral and productive skills and strategies in fostering community engagement and development in the lives of young graduates in Cameroon.

Employability & Practical Skills Development

Equip young graduates with hands-on experience, workplace competencies, and job-ready skills beyond exam-based learning.

Youth Empowerment & Income Generation

Support graduates through volunteer placements and income-generating opportunities that build confidence, independence, and productivity.

Community Engagement & Development

Strengthen behavioral and productive skills by fostering active youth participation in community-driven development initiatives.

SUCCESS STORIES

Since its launch, the Circles Volunteer Program (CVP) has successfully completed six cohorts, empowering and graduating over 70 young participants from diverse academic backgrounds. Through hands-on training, mentorship, and professional exposure, the program has transformed many lives by equipping youths with employability and entrepreneurial skills. Remarkably, over 42.8% of the graduates are now gainfully employed in various institutions and organizations across Cameroon, while others have advanced to pursue higher education or established their own entrepreneurial ventures. This tangible impact demonstrates CVP’s effectiveness in bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world opportunities, fostering self-reliance, productivity, and hope among young Cameroonians.
